Presided over by Prof. Aref, the 27th meeting of the Commission for the Advancement of Mathematics was held at the Academy on Thursday, June 8th.
The attendees consisted of Profs. Soltankhah, Faraji Dana, Towfighi, Toomanian, Sal Moslehian, Mohammadzade, Jabbehdar Maralani, Sohrabpour Rejali, Ghasemi Honari, and Abdollahi.
At first, Prof. Aref welcomed Prof. Mohammad Ali Zulfi Gol, Minister of Science, Research and Technology, for attending the meeting of the Commission. Then he pointed to the goals, activities, and programs of the Commission which has been established in the Academy for more than a decade with the cooperation of the Departments of Engineering Sciences and Basic Sciences of the Academy and related scientific associations, especially the Iranian Mathematical Association and the Iranian Statistical Association, and with the approval of the Academy’s presidency and General Assembly.
He also listed some effective measures of the Commission to solve challenges and problems. Paying attention to the Seventh Development Plan of the Country and the concerns that exist in higher education issues, Prof. Aref expressed his hope that the presence of the Minister of Science in this meeting would be a prelude to more interactions of the Commission with the ministers of science and providing practical solutions to overcome problems facing mathematics and basic sciences and the country's higher education.
After Prof. Aref’s speech, Prof. Toomanian listed some of the activities of the Commission and the most important problems in mathematics and science in general at the school and university levels.
Finally, each participant expressed his concerns about higher education issues especially in the fields of basic sciences.
Prof. Zulfi Gol thanked the Academy and the Commission for inviting him and expressed his happiness to be in the presence of prominent and experienced professors of the country. He explained the activities of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and the programs that are planned to solve many challenges raised by professors, especially the programs of the Ministry of Science in the Seventh Development Plan. He also referred to the think- tanks formed in the Ministry of Science and said that the Ministry of Science would definitely use the guidelines of the Academy’s Commission for the Advancement of Mathematics to realize the programs of the country's higher education system.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Aref, once again appreciated the presence of the Minister of Science in the meeting and summarized the presented materials and stated that the important comments and concerns of the Commission would be submitted to the honorable Minister in a letter. He also requested that one of the deputy ministers of the ministry participate as a legal member in the meetings of the Commission.
